Reiki is a Japanese word pronounced ‘ray-key’ that translates to ‘universal life force energy’, which was chosen by Dr Mikao Usui to represent an ancient art of manual healing he rediscovered over a century ago.
The History of Reiki
Dr Mikao Usui, a Japanese scholar and academic, embarked on a quest to uncover the mysteries of ‘hands-on healing’ and after many years, discovered a formula in an ancient Sanskrit sutra composed of symbols and mantras in 1922. During a twenty-one-day retreat on Mount Kurama, Dr Usui experienced a profound spiritual awakening and enlightenment about the application and significance of the formula.
On the journey down the mountain Dr Usui injured his foot which forced him to stop and sit down. He applied the knowledge gleaned and put his hands on the injury. The bleeding stopped, pain diminished and the toe nail settled back in place. With personal confirmation this energy renewal technique was effective he called it Reiki and devoted the rest of his life to developing this manual system of healing.
After Dr Usui died in 1926, his number one disciple Dr Chujiro Hayashi continued his legacy. In turn, Dr Hayashi nominated Mrs Hawayo Takata as his successor, knowing she would preserve the sacred teachings and standards. He also knew she would introduce Reiki to other continents. Thanks to her foresight and initiating 22 Reiki Masters before she passed away in 1980, Reiki has become a popular and thriving healing modality worldwide.
Reiki Healing
What is Reiki for?
Reiki is an empowering, self-help, versatile and natural system of hands-on healing that stimulates the body’s potential to heal. By releasing energetic blockages, represses emotions or toxins, increases energy flow induces deep levels of relaxation and promotes harmony and balance between the mind, body and spirit for unity consciousness and health. This energy renewal technique facilitates a stronger connection with your innate wisdom and helps to unlock personal insights, discover answers, gain meaning and purpose of life thereby, fulfil your potential with ease, grace, joy and satisfaction.
How does Reiki work?
The hallmark of Reiki are the four sacred energy procedures known as attunements. Reiki Masters literally ‘tune in’ practitioners to channel an additional flow of life force energy, similar to updating a television from analogue to digital frequencies for superior quality.
Reiki is predominantly administered through light touch but can be activated by holding one or both hands very close to the body. The inner wisdom utilises Reiki according to priority and need regardless of whether you are struggling with physical ailments, mental and emotional challenges or seeking deeper spiritual connections.
What are the benefits of Reiki?
Acknowledging the mind and body are inextricably linked, regardless of whether you are fit and well, have a health issue or challenge in life, Reiki provides an integrated system of self-healing. Reiki promotes physical healing, emotional stability, mental tranquility, spiritual clarity and sensory perception. Increased vitality leads to renewed enthusiasm and quality of daily life.
Reiki is an invaluable first aid tool that can be used at any time whether at home, work, or leisure simply by engaging one or both hands upon yourself or others. When used in emergencies there is evidence of fast physical healing such as staunching blood loss, pain relief, burns seldom blister and bruises tend to fade overnight. Scientific research has demonstrated oxygen increases in the haemoglobin by up to thirty percent while receiving Reiki.
The Usui Reiki Lineage
Many people are curious about their family history and ancestral roots, in much the same way members of the Reiki community place great store by their lineage. Any modality named and acknowledged as Reiki emanates from Dr Usui and can usually be traced back to him.
Christine Gould has a clear lineage having served a five-year apprenticeship with Barbara McGregor from Sydney, Australia and undertaken an intensive Master Training Programme with John Harvey Gray in America, which makes her fifth in line to Dr Usui.
Reiki Principles
Dr Usui created a creed to be applied as counsel with the physical healing and practice of Reiki, which were based on the literary works of the Emperor Meiji of Japan. He recommended Reiki graduates to follow these five precepts as a reminder of how to conduct their lives and accept personal responsibility.
“If you wanted everlasting happiness, good health and fulfilment, then you must ‘live Reiki,’ according to Dr Usui’s ideals”.
